International Aviation Academy, Norwich

Stripping back this 1938 vintage MoD Type C hangar to its bare structure, recladding it and forming new spaces enabled us to create a wholly new, contemporary interior. We were able to blend aviation history with the excitement of advanced engineering and the possibilities for flight in the twenty first century.

Home to students gaining technical knowledge that enables them to join the modern aviation industry, the building blends workshop spaces and an out-of-service Boeing 737, which the students continually dismantle and re-assemble, with more traditional teaching and learning spaces. KLM, City College Norwich and the University of East Anglia jointly organise and run the courses.

Greenfield led this project at Hamson Barron Smith.
